A new study discovered how pain is signalled from within Schwann cells and finds several ways to block this signalling, providing potential targets for new migraine treatments. Health News | Study Illustrates How Migraine Pain Signals Are Generated and Blocked.
A new study provides insights on how peripheral pain signals are generated and can be potentially blocked. Scientists show activating receptors for CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide) receptors generates pain signals in Schwann cells. Based on experiments conducted on mouse and human cells, the authors propose, blocking CGRP entry into Schwann cell endosomes and inhibiting endosomal CGRP through small molecule antagonists, offer potential new treatments for migraine pain.
