In reporting of the Chauvin defense case, it was embarrassing to hear alleged experts try to justify excessive force on a handcuffed culprit lying on the ground and not only forced down by Officer Chauvin but surrounded by at least three fellow police officers. Equally embarrassing was the absence of any prosecution highlighting of the three police cheerleaders in the culprit’s capture. In a similar situation as a combat infantryman in World War II, after D-E Day, I was assigned to a military police unit. The former New York City police lieutenant who commanded the platoon advised that when we had neutralized (e.g., handcuffed) a perp lying on the ground, if he was not compliant, let him grovel and wear himself out, no excessive force needed. Our job was to keep the peace, not deliver the punishment.
