IWF Board urged to secure weightlifting future at crucial meeting

Friday, 26 February 2021 The Executive Board of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has been urged to be aware of its collective responsibility to secure our long-term Olympic future at a meeting tomorrow morning. The plea has come from Ashley Metcalfe, chief executive of British Weight Lifting (BWL), who in a letter to the IWF leaders and Board members says it is without doubt the most important meeting we have faced in our 116-year history. Rumours were circulating tonight that the date of the elections might be moved, and that Nicu Vlad, President of the Romanian Weightlifting Federation and a vice-president of the IWF, had withdrawn his candidacy for the governing body’s Presidency.

IWF Reveals List of Provisional Candidates 02/09/21 (ATR) The International Weightlifting Federation releases the provisional list of candidates for the 2021 Electoral Congress. IWF interim president Michael Irani (IWF) There are 11 candidates vying for the presidency of the troubled federation, including current interim president Michael Irani. Irani, who said in October when taking the interim position that he would not be running for the fulltime job, does not have the support of his own British national federation. There are eight other men running alongside Irani: Jinqiang Zhou of China, Pyrros Dimas of Greece, Ali Moradi of Iran, Mohammed Jalood of Iraq, Zhanat Tussupbekov of Kazakhstan, Stian Grimseth of Norway, Mohamed Yousef Al-Mana of Qatar and Nicu Vlad of Romania.

Weightlifting s banned nations and 85-year-old Coffa to feature in IWF elections

Tuesday, 9 February 2021 Fourteen members of the troubled International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Executive Board are on the list of candidates for next month’s elections. Seven of them are running for President, alongside four nominations who are not on the Board - former IWF Interim President Ursula Papandrea from the United States, Jinqiang Zhou of China, Stian Grimseth of Norway, and Ali Moradi of Iran. The only IWF Board members not standing for the elections, scheduled for March 26 to 27, are guaranteed a seat anyway, as Presidents of Continental Federations. The Board s candidates include two representatives from countries that are banned from Tokyo 2020 because of multiple doping violations, another whose nation is likely to join them, a fourth who might, the current Interim President who does not have the support of his own National Federation, and an 85-year-old.
