But to note in the response text that the board of supervisors notes that the Sheriffs Department deputies disputes the figure of 50 deputies noting that some of the employees included in the figures are actually out on smla, military or medical leave and the civil grand jury is right to recognize this process as a financial drain on the department that impedes its ability to fill positions. As the department of Human Resources notes, most of the operative laws are beyond San Franciscos authority, but practical improvements can be made by bringing employees back to work on modified duty an effort that the board of supervisors fully supports. So the recommendation from the civil grand jury that the board of supervisors should request an audit conducted by the budget and legislative analyst a
Treatment for their workers and early return to work. So what we can look at the ways in which we can bring employees back to work on modified duty, so at least those positions arent open while were paying full salary and we have worked with the Sheriffs Department to help lower its ttd costs by bringing employees back to work on modified duty for longer period as they recover from their injuries. Finally, we would like to chime in and say in recommendation 1b it says the board of supervisors should request an audit conducted by the budget and legislative analysts, and we would certainly like to participate in that. It might be difficult for us to crossreference all of the payments, but we certainly could put the costs of the Workers Compensation, temporary disability payments together with some of the overtime costs and help to do an analysis of that data. And so the task for this particular response entered into the record that the government audit and Oversight Committee on september 25, 2014 supervisor london breed requested the budget and legislative analyst to prepare a report on payments made on behalf of the Sheriffs Department for w claims and related overtime costs during the last several years. As the department of Human Resources notes it and the Sheriffs Department may be able to correlate Workers Compensation claims with increases in overtime costs and quantify the impact.
