The sick woman insists she has been poisoned. Her doctors disagree and have now obtained a court order requiring her to be forcibly medicated, by gastric tube if necessary.
Hamilton Family Court Judge Nicola Grimes heard an application last year from a psychiatrist which sought an interim personal order to allow immediate medical intervention because of serious concerns for the woman’s health. The woman had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. She had lived nomadically before being admitted to the centre with treatment resistant psychosis. She had initially been treated for Graves’ disease but discharged herself and stopped taking the medication. She is now an inpatient. Judge Grimes said the woman did not believe she had the disease and instead maintained she had been poisoned by MSG (monosodium glutamate, a common food additive).
