Braves vs Mets series preview: Atlanta heads to New York for a pivotal series

Photo by Todd Kirkland/Getty Images The Atlanta Braves will begin their biggest series of the season on Monday when they open a five-game set against the New York Mets with another doubleheader. The Braves will come into the series with a 48-50 record, good for third place in the NL East standings, trailing the Mets by five games and the Phillies by one. Atlanta began the road trip by splitting a four-game series in Philadelphia. They scored a win in the opener Thursday but were held in check by Zack Wheeler Friday. They exploded for 15 runs in Saturday’s win and had a chance to win the series outright but Aaron Nola outdueled Touki Toussaint in a 2-1 loss.

David Peterson to undergo surgery on right foot

share-square-770368 NEW YORK When David Peterson sustained a right oblique strain earlier this month, the Mets knew he would be sidelined for several weeks. They could not have predicted what would come next. Just as he was recovering from the oblique strain, Peterson injured his right foot while walking through the clubhouse on Friday evening, sustaining a Jones fracture of the fifth metatarsal that will require surgery. The Mets won’t have a timetable for Peterson’s return until after the operation, but it’s possible he has thrown his final pitch this season. “I don’t know,” Mets manager Luis Rojas said. “I can’t give you an answer there.”

Hernández hits 2 of Toronto s 5 homers in 10-3 win over Mets

NEW YORK (AP) All-Star Teoscar Hernández hit two of Toronto’s five home runs and the Blue Jays beat New York Mets 10-3 Saturday night to stop a three-game losing streak. George Springer, Marcus Semien and Bo Bichette also homered for the Blue Jays, who overtook the San Francisco Giants for the MLB lead with 149 homers. The Giants entered the day with 146. The power outburst came on a day in which Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoya tinkered with the lineup and moved Springer from the middle of the lineup to the leadoff spot and slotted All-Star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at the second slot.

Mets news: Mets trade for OF Mark Payton, place Nogosek on the IL, recall Drury

Sam Greene via Imagn Content Services, LLC Before tonight’s game with the Blue Jays, the Mets made a number of roster moves. Pitcher Stephen Nogosek, called up last week during the Mets’s series with the Cardinals, is being placed on the 10-day Injured List with a sore shoulder. In his place, the Mets are calling up right-handed utility player Brandon Drury for his second tour of duty with the team this season. The Mets also transferred David Peterson to the 60 Day IL after he fractured his foot walking; according to manager Luis Rojas, he didn’t stub it or step on anything, but rather was just a freak fracture. He will require surgery, and any timetable for his return was ‘thrown out the window’ according to Rojas. He was quick to note that these things can heal quickly, however.
