sustained winds of 80 miles an hour. authorities on the coast are saying it will likely cause severe flooding as well as spur more tornadoes. we have complete coverage of hurricane irene including information on bay area airports. let s begin with jay gray. reporter: irene made landfall earlier this evening but still delivering strong winds and a severe sea. this is quite a system. as irene ripped across the outer banks, the mass i haviive storm massive wind. but not what was feared. reports are standing strong. reporter: trees were snapped, power lines pulled down, sand pushed across the dunes. the storm is being blamed for at least five deaths and as it pushed to e the north, the fear of irene s draft was for millions. we anticipate heavy rain, potential flooding when and power outages throughout the area of the storm. which means all up and down the eastern seaboard. reporter: thousands of sandbags were being moved to place in the nation s capital. in maryland, c

the truck. we re told he worked for john daly s trucking in nevada, a company with seven safety violations but not involving the same truck. authorities also say the train was traveling at 78 miles an hour before the crash. the speed limit in that area of nevada for the train is 80 miles an hour. the motor carrier operations team has been reviewing records on the company, have found they have been involved in 19 rap dom roadside inspections since december 2010. out of those 19 random inspections, they have encountered seven violations, only one of which has been an out of service violation. those inspections did not involve this particular accident vehicle. the ntsb plans to visit the company this week. the current plan is to do that starting tuesday. at that time we ll be reviewing not only the company records but the driver s records. authorities plan to look thoroughly the record data from the train in addition to the truckdriver s cell phone records. at this point the
