OMAAR: Drum Temple

Bandcamp / Buy Centering polyrhythms and syncopation in the traditions of gqom, UK funky, or dembow may be the order of the day for club music, but Mexican producer OMAAR isn’t new to these kinds of sounds. Since 2012, Omar Suárez has cut and pasted elements of grime, tribal, and Latin American styles into the structural elements of techno and house. Drum Temple, his debut full-length for Mexican label NAAFI, further cements him as a faithful proponent of rhythmic fluidity and Afro-diasporic percussion. All seven tracks, along with three remixes from NAAFI members and affiliates Lao, Nick León, and WRACK, revel in eroding barriers between percussive techniques, instead embracing a nomadic sense of rhythm and release.

Mexico City’s OMAAR will release his debut LP, ‘Drum Temple’, via NAAFI this month.  The DJ and producer’s fourth release for the label, a crucial platform for Mexico’s thriving underground club music scene, finds him fusing the percussive sounds of dembow, tribal house, deep house, techno, UK funky, hard drum and gqom. Speaking of the album, he said: “I made a meticulous selection because I try to capture my experience and vision of some genres and musical styles.” OMAAR’s ‘Drum Temple’ features seven original tracks from the producer, who has been a prolific and versatile figure in the local scene for almost a decade. The album also comes with three remixes from Lao, Nick León and WRACK.
