V2Food is one of many new contenders in the alternative protein space, founded in Australia but now setting its sights on Europe, Asia and beyond. The company has seen strong uptake in its home market, and the first goal is to be No. 1 in Australia, said CEO and founder Nick Hazell, formerly of MasterFoods and PepsiCo R&D. But in the meantime they'll be expanding their presence in Asia, where partner Burger King has launched a Whopper with their patty, and in Europe, where the product's minimal suspicious elements come into play. Currently v2Food makes plant-based ground beef and patties, sausages and a ready-made Bolognese sauce.

Main Sequence, CSIRO’s deep-tech focused venture capital firm, has closed its second funding round, scoring $250 million for investment into startups tackling some of the world’s biggest challenges.
And, while the funding will continue to focus on commercialising research and funding high-growth potential startups, the team is also going to be taking a problem-first approach, and creating businesses from scratch.
Breaking down the barriers
Main Sequence was established to invest in tech that solves issues facing the whole of humanity.
Those issues include feeding a growing global population; democratising healthcare; ‘bridging the gap’ to space; and modernising industries, all with focus on commercialising science and research developments.

Independent network Hero has continued its new business streak, with its marketing agency B.B.E. picking up the strategy and creative for plant-based meat company, V2Food.
The appointment followed a competitive pitch, as the brand sought an agency partner to take it through its next phase of growth.
V2Food launched in 2019 and was behind Hungry Jacks’ plant-based V2 Rebel Whopper. The brand was founded by Nick Hazell and is a partnership between the CSIRO, Main Sequence Ventures and Jack Cowin’s Competitive Foods Australia.
“It’s been less than a year since we launched V2mince product and grown the brand from an idea to leading the category in Australia with ranging across the country. In a COVID world, that’s no easy feat, and we’re excited to take the brand to the next level working alongside B.B.E as our agency partner,” said V2Food’s chief growth officer, Andrew May.
