There are spring training surprises for most every team most every year, and we’ve already seen that in Yankees camp with lefty journeyman Lucas Luetge contending for a bullpen spot as a non-roster journeyman who hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2015.
All the while, inevitably there are disappointing showings for roster hopefuls, and the Yankees have that area covered, too.

Just after the start of the Yankees’ exhibition game against the Tigers on Friday, the team announced a number of moves to cut down their roster. It’s the first time this spring that the Yankees have made a big batch of changes to give fans a better idea of who might make the club on Opening Day.
Reliever Adam Warren was likely the most prominent roster contender demoted to minor league camp. He had been a non-roster invitee and appeared to be healthy after recovering from Tommy John surgery in the past year and a half, but despite throwing three scoreless innings across three games in spring training, the Yankees seemingly did not think that his repertoire was MLB-caliber at this point. Barring a rash of bullpen injuries, he’ll have to work his way back into the team’s good graces at the alternate site in April.

The Yankees are in Lakeland today to take on the Tigers. If this sounds familiar, it’s because this same exact matchup happened on Tuesday in the same setting.
This time though, the Yankees will be pitching Jameson Taillon rather than Deivi García. After he throws a few innings, Aaron Boone will cobble together the rest of the game from the following bunch that traveled to Joker Marchant: Albert Abreu, Kyle Barraclough, Nestor Cortes Jr., Nick Goody, Brooks Kriske, Tyler Lyons, Reggie McClain, and Addison Russ.
Gary Sanchez hit the first of three home runs for New York, and the Yankees beat the Blue Jays 4-1 on Wednesday to hand Toronto its first loss of spring training.
