Family fight to clear name of last woman hanged in Dorset

THE trial and execution of a Bridport woman who was the inspiration behind a literary classic will be examined again in a television programme tomorrow. Martha Brown was tried and subsequently hanged in the summer of 1856 for the murder of her husband, John Brown. She was the last woman to be publicly hanged in Dorset. She was executed outside the gates of Dorchester Prison in a public hanging witnessed by a young Thomas Hardy. It is widely believed the Mrs Brown and her hanging were the influence behind Hardy s Tess of the d Urbervilles . BBC s Murder, Mystery and the Family returns to the case of Mrs Brown to further analyse whether she was given a fair trial and if she was acting in self defence.

Thousands watched execution of Martha Brown in Dorchester

But on August 9, 1856, Dorchester was particularly packed. But this was not a time for trading or haggling or errands. It was time for morbid entertainment – the execution of a woman scorned, Elizabeth Martha Brown. Some 3,000 to 4,000 people packed into North Square to witness her death; the last public hanging of a woman in Dorset. Not only has Martha Brown gone down in history, she is also immortalised in fiction. For one of the faces making up the crowd would become a famous writer and get the inspiration for his novel, Tess of the D’Urbervilles, from this event. Author and researcher Rosemary Ellerbeck said: “The main reason for the fascination with Martha Brown is that Thomas Hardy, aged 16, witnessed her execution.
