The Meeple Guild - Tumbleweed: Part 2

The winner in Tumbleweed is the player that occupies the most spaces at the end of the game. On a turn, you may settle a space by placing a stack of pieces on a space. The number of pieces in the placed stack is the number of spaces occupied by the player in the space’s line of sight. If the space is occupied, the stack being placed must be larger than the stack already occupying the space. So the rules for the game played on a hex board are rather simple. So, what in Zapala’s mind as designer is the best element of the game?

Inside the mind-bending business of keeping a restaurant alive during a pandemic: a memoir from Toronto s top chef

Twenty-twenty started off great. January is usually the toughest month in the restaurant business, with everyone hiding from the cold and saving money after Christmas. But every table was taken at Alo, my flagship restaurant at Queen and Spadina. Same story at my two Alo spinoffs: my diner-inspired spot, Aloette, and my Yorkville steak house, Alobar. We’d just opened our fourth location, a private event space in Yorkville named Salon, and we were already booking weddings into the summer. After five years in business, we’d matured as a company we could better predict what customers would want with each season, and we could plan. I believed both Alobar and Aloette could be replicated in new neighbourhoods, maybe even in new cities. I started to look forward to every report from Olga Novokchanova, our accountant. I was feeling so good about things that I booked a spring vacation.

The Meeple Guild - Game gift thoughts

Unless of course the person on the list has a hobby they are truly dedicated to. I doubt you could find a serious hobbyist that doesn’t themselves have a list of items they still wish to add to their collections. That is certainly true for most serious board gamers. There is always some game that has called to a player but they have not yet picked up, generally because they have opted for another game when in the store. They may want the latest version of Pandemic, but opted for the new Photosynthesis expansion. Of course the trick can be knowing what ‘Uncle Bill’ needs, all right what he wants in terms of a game? A collection gets to be a rather large pile of boxes, and usually it’s probably best to simply ask for a few ideas.
