Results based on experiments using a robotic dinosaur and computer animations of dinosaur behavior show that insect prey is startled into fleeing more often and from farther distance when primitive small wing-like feathers were present at the end of forelimbs, especially when the feathers have contrasting color-patterns, and when tail feathers of a large surface area were used during visual displays.</p>
