Jann Mari Nayre and Rose Jean Fadol inched closer to gaining berths to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics after impressive victories in the World Table Tennis Singles Qualification Tournament in Doha, Qatar early Monday, March 15.
Nayre, who made history as the first Filipino table tennis player to compete in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, stunned world No. 68 Lubomir Pistej of Slovakia, 7-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11-3, 11-9, to barge into the men’s quarterfinals against Italian Niagol Stoyanov.
The PH bet was coming off an 11-4, 8-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-2 victory over Daniel Kogans of Latvia in the Round of 32 of the Knockout 1 bracket.

Doha, March 15 : Ace India table tennis players Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee began their quest for a berth at this year’s Tokyo Olympics on a winning note with comfortable straight-set victories in their respective women’s singles knockout stage-I opening round matches at the World Singles Qualification Tournament in Doha.
Commonwealth Games gold medallist Manika dominated Bulgaria’s Maria Yovkova during her 11-5, 11-7, 11-4, 11-0 win. While Sutirtha faced some resistance from her opponent Lisa Lung in the fourth game but it was too late for Italian as the Indian wrapped the game as well as the match 11-3, 11-5, 11-7, 12-10 in her favour.

Seeded 30th for the men’s singles event at the World Singles Qualification Tournament, Czech Republic’s Lubomir Jancarik is through to the knockout 1 final in Doha following a remarkable 4-2 win over the no.1 seed from Great Britain, Liam Pitchford (11-6, 2-11, 13-11, 9-11, 11-7, 12-10) on Monday 15th March.

Jancarik, who lodged an impressive comeback from two games down to beat Spain’s Alvaro Robles in the previous round, needed no such luck in his semi-final meeting with Pitchford. Never behind on games, the Czech showed great character from start to finish and now has his sights set firmly on Tokyo.
