Fresh plan launched to build new Newton Rigg College >More in © Publicity Plus An eleventh-hour plan to save Cumbria’s Newton Rigg College from closure by opening an independent college on the site has been launched. Community organisation Newton Rigg Ltd (NRL) is calling for support for its “urgent action plan” to rebuild the future of land-based education in the county. NRL’s bid to rebuild Newton Rigg would start with land-based training courses this year, followed by the introduction of apprenticeships in 2022 and leading to the opening of a new, independent, Cumbrian Newton Rigg College in 2024/25.  In February, a strategic review led by the further education commissioner announced that two multi-million pound bids to secure the future of the Penrith-based agricultural college had been unsuccessful.

It is hoped the new independent college will start welcoming its first students in September 2025. Behind the scheme is community organisation Newton Rigg Ltd, which has launched an urgent action plan to rebuild land-based education in the county. Operators of the Newton Rigg campus, Askham Bryan, announced that it was pulling out of Cumbria and shutting the facility’s doors. Its chief executive has been grilled by MPs over the decision and we have launched a petition to save land-based education in the county.
