Newton is just the latest school district in Massachusetts to be caught up in a wave of teacher strikes in the last 18 months. But with nearly 12,000 students and a per capita income over $90,000, it’s also the largest and most affluent of those to experience a strike.
A Middlesex Superior Court judge on Friday ordered the Newton Teachers Association to end its strike, and if it doesn't by 3 p.m. Sunday, it will face fines since skipping class for the picket line is illegal in Massachusetts.
The two sides resumed negotiations with the help of a mediator Saturday morning and they are scheduled to continue until 7 p.m. The union said it will then hold a press conference.
