Sky News host Paul Murray says the most accurate temperature check about the “health or otherwise” of the government is the preferred leader stakes.
Mr Murray pointed to the Queensland election where Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk was the preferred premier over then-LNP leader Deb Frecklington 56-30 whereas the two-party-preferred stakes had the election much closer.
He also pointed to the upcoming Western Australian election which has Mark McGowan leading over Zak Kirkup 86-10 as preferred premier.
In the latest Newspoll Scott Morrison’s popularity strengthened to 61 per cent as preferred prime minister while Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese dipped to 26 per cent.
“At the moment, preferred premier, preferred prime minister is the closest to reality, sorry twitter it ain’t hashtags, it ain’t trending, it ain’t what you get constantly reaffirmed by when it comes to the echo chamber of the Greens,” Mr Murray said.
