Coloradoâs independent redistricting commissions are, in fact, independent from the stateâs political class and their desires, the state Supreme Court ruled Monday, rebuffing lawmakers, the governor, the secretary of state and the attorney general.
Specifically, the Colorado Supreme Court said the lawmakersâ bill that would change this yearâs redistricting process amounts to an unconstitutional infringement on the redistricting commissionsâ authority to determine how to go about their once-in-a-decade work of redrawing the stateâs political maps. Gov. Jared Polis and Secretary of State Jena Griswold, voiced support for the bill, in addition to near unanimous support from the stateâs 100 legislators.
