The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved its judgment on the plea by Prabir Purkayastha, the editor of NewsClick, who has challenged his arrest and remand by the Delhi Police in connection with a UAPA case.
NewsClick’s Amit Chakravarty and Prabir Purkayastha had approached the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court decision upholding their arrest.
A Delhi court has allowed NewsClick s human resources department chief, Amit Chakravarty, to become an approver in a case against the news portal under anti-terror law UAPA. Chakravarty was arrested on an application seeking the court s permission to turn an approver. The case involves allegations that the news portal received money to spread pro-China propaganda.
The Patiala House Court in Delhi extended the judicial custody of Newsclick s founder and editor-in-chief, Prabir Purkayastha, and Human Resources head, Amit Chakravarty, until December 22. The Delhi Police had arrested them under the anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, alleging that NewsClick received significant funds for pro-China propaganda.
The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing on pleas by NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha and HR head Amit Chakravarty challenging their arrest under the UAPA anti-terror law. The court will address the matter after the Diwali vacation. The accused have also applied for medical bail, which will be considered at a later date.
