Fire displaces residents after tiki torch fell over at Monroe County apartments

BERLIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (FOX 2) - Residents of 12 apartments are without homes after a tiki torch fell over and caused a fire early Monday in Berlin Township.
Authorities were called to Newport Woods Apartments for the fire just after 12:30 a.m. The building was evacuated and a man was treated at the scene for burns on his hand.
In addition to displacing residents, three apartments had major damage, officials said. The American Red Cross was notified to provide assistance to residents impacted by the fire.
Authorities believe the fire was accidentally caused by a tiki torch filled with lighter fluid, but it remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Michigan State Police at 734-242-3500.

MONROE COUNTY, MI – Twelve renters were displaced from their apartments and one person was injured Monday morning after a lit Tiki torch fell over and started a fire, police said.
Police and fire crews were called at 12:39 a.m. May 3, to the Newport Woods Apartments on Canterberry Lane in Berlin Township for a reported apartment on fire, according to Michigan State Police.
Emergency crews arrived to find flames coming from the exterior of the building as officers evacuated residents from the 12-unit apartment building, police said.
Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze but not before is caused major damage to three apartments and additional smoke and water damage to the remaining apartments in the building, police said.

MONROE COUNTY, Mich Officials say a tiki torch is the cause of a fire at a Monroe County apartment complex early Monday morning.
The fire started at the Newport Woods Apartments in Newport after a tiki torch that was burning on the outside deck of the third floor fell over.
Crews say the torch caught fire to the second level and then spread.
