The Newport News Police Department hopes to relocate its north precinct from a 5,514-square-foot station at 368 Deshazor Dr. to a nearly 76,000-square-foot building at the Sherwood Shopping Center. The new building would allow the department to have a training center and office, classroom and community spaces.
Metal detectors and clear backpacks are two of the biggest changes for students returning Monday to the Virginia elementary school where police said a 6-year-old boy intentionally shot his first-grade teacher earlier this month.
