Subdivisions and neighborhoods on the south and east side of Bend can expect some nighttime and early morning smoke impacts after crews burned 250 acres in southeast Bend. Sunriver and Newberry Caldera could also be impacted if smoke settles to the south, southeast. Today and Thursday of this week fuel specialists will conduct prescribed burning operations approximately 7 miles south of Sisters adjacent to Forest Service Road (FSR) 16 and near Melvin Butte. Specialists will underburn approximately 197 acres on two units. Ignitions will begin at 9:30 each day. Smoke will be visible to residents of Sisters and nearby areas. Signs will be placed on the FSR 16 that will indicate to motorists to slow down because of smoke impacts. Signs also will be posted on FSR 1620. Motorists should avoid FSR 1620 between Wednesday – Friday due to smoke impacts and heavy fire traffic. BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) On Monday and Tuesday, fuel specialists with the Deschutes National Forest, with assistance from Bend Fire and Rescue and the Oregon Department of Forestry, plan to conduct prescribed fire operations on both national forest and private lands southeast of Bend.
Specialists will underburn 252 acres in total of of national forest and private lands. The prescribed burning on the private lands is being done in coordination with the private landowner, using Good Neighbor Authority.

More prescribed burning is scheduled Tuesday in southeast of Bend. Fuel specialists with the Deschutes National Forest with assistance from Bend Fire and Rescue and the Oregon Department of Forestry will underburn 252 acres between the national forest lands and private lands. The prescribed burning on the private lands is being done in coordination with the private landowner using Good Neighbor Authority.
Ignitions were to begin on Monday, but delayed by weather conditions. Ignitions will begin at approximately 9 a.m. and should end by 5 p.m. Smoke and residual burning will be visible in the area for up to a week post ignition. Paulina Lake Guard Station is a Forest Service facility located along the west road entrance into Newberry Caldera and is about 200 yards from Paulina Lake. The guard station was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938. It was designed in the Pacific Northwest region distinctive Cascadia rustic style. Lumber was utilized in its construction.
It is a three-room residence originally built to house the forest guard stationed in Newberry Caldera. The three rooms were a private living room with a wood stove for heat, a kitchen with a large wood stove for cooking, and a large bedroom.
