Between a pandemic, a presidential election, and a summer of protests against police brutality, self-care has evolved beyond a modern luxury and into a literal means of surviving during a pivotal time in our nation’s history. If you go by social media, it’s easy to think self-care is simply a series of Instagram posts, candles, bubble baths, and yoga pants mainly accessible to well-off young people in expensive urban areas and the suburbs. However, the origins of today’s self-care industry are deeply embedded in the Black Power movement of the 1960s and ’70s, in underserved communities across the country.

And, this year, the fight against the spread of the coronavirus has meant a necessary surge in social separation. For elderly individuals, loneliness can be especially difficult. At Harrogate, a not-for-profit life plan community in Lakewood, isolation of the residents has been a concern of the staffers this season. Kelly O’Toole, MSW, director of social services at Harrogate said, “COVID-19 has had such an impact on everyone, especially our seniors. The impact social isolation has on older adults can be detrimental. It not only affects their mental health but their overall well-being. It has been hard for all of our residents at Harrogate to have such a change in their routine both inside and outside of Harrogate. By TAPINTO SOMA STAFF Credits: TAPinto.net File Photo December 19, 2020 at 6:28 PM ESSEX COUNTY, NJ The Essex County distribution of pantry items for those dealing with food insecurity will have special contents for the Christmas holiday. In addition to a variety of non-perishable food such as oatmeal, rice, fruit, peanut butter, jelly, shelf stable milk and canned vegetables, chili, soup and ravioli, residents also will receive a frozen turkey and a case of bottled water. The water is being provided in partnership with the Newark Water Association. Items may vary based upon their availability. The emergency food boxes contain enough food to provide about 40 meals.
