It will come as no surprise to hear that New Zealand has a shortage of nurses, with a particular need for nurses of MÄori and Pacific descent.
In efforts to bolster these numbers, Whitireia is the only institution in the Wellington region to offer a New Zealand Diploma in Enrolled Nursing â and good news has come that the Government is providing funding for this diploma, which now falls into the âfree trades trainingâ category.Â
Enrolled Nursing is an accessible way to become a nurse for those with NCEA Level 2, and is an 18 month programme which includes six months of hands-on clinical work.Â
Julian spent two years doing the New Zealand Certificate in Cookery, levels 3 and 4 and New Zealand Diploma in Professional Cookery level 5, as well as an international City & Guilds qualification at the New Plymouth campus. When she finished the course in February 2020 it was too late to register for the ceremony, so Julian has had to wait until 2021 to walk across the stage. “I m nervous, but I’m really excited as well. Just thinking about it, I get quite emotional because especially during level 5, so much happened that year.”
