Want to run for school board? File by Monday | News, Sports, Jobs - Adirondack Daily Enterprise

(Enterprise photo — Kevin Shea) If you want to run for your local public school board, the deadline to file your candidacy is Monday afternoon. That date is the same for every school district in the state. The school election day for board members, budgets and special propositions is also the same statewide Tuesday, May 18. All school terms are for three years, except for one unexpired term in Lake Placid. Each candidate needs to file a petition with at least 25 qualified signatures. (The requirement is for either 25 or 2% of the number of voters in the district’s last election, but for that 2% to be more than 25, a district would have to have had more than 1,250 voters, and the Adirondack Park’s districts are too small for that.)

Absentee ballots should be easier to get for school voting in New York

Rockland/Westchester Journal News It appears that anyone with general concerns related to COVID-19 will be allowed to request an absentee ballot from their school district for next month s voting on budget proposals and school board races. Both the Assembly and state Senate passed legislation last week that should make absentee ballots easy to obtain. Normally, voters need to give a specific reason for requesting a ballot, such as being out of town or having an illness or disability. Gov. Andrew Cuomo had not signed the bill as of Friday. But he has indicated his clear support, said Jay Worona, deputy executive director and general counsel for the New York State School Boards Association.

Federal stimulus nearing passage would further bolster school budgets

Federal stimulus nearing passage would further bolster school budgets | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS The latest federal stimulus bill hurtling through Congress would represent another massive infusion of money for New York schools – even as the specifics are still shrouded amid state budget uncertainty. Schools across New York are set to receive about $9 billion combined in direct aid to districts, which comes on top of around $4 billion in direct federal aid to New York schools approved in December, money Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposed allocating to districts next school year. Another $12.5 billion included in the new stimulus bill, which House lawmakers are expected to give final approval to Wednesday, would provide general funding to the state, which could be used to offset proposed cuts in state school aid.
