STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The number of influenza (flu) cases on Staten Island has dropped drastically compared to previous years, with the borough experiencing just a fraction of its usual cases, according to New York State data.

This pandemic, if nothing else, is really an opportunity for us to make some great improvements in our society, Christine Schuyler, the public health director of Chautauqua County, said.
One of those improvements may just be be sick individuals wearing masks.

While coronavirus numbers continue to astound, locally, flu numbers do, as well, but for a different reason: they are virtually non-existent.

For the week ending Jan. 9, Oneida County saw 1,805 coronavirus cases, and only 52 flu cases. The same week, in Herkimer County, there were 790 coronavirus cases and 19 flu cases. In Otsego County, 158 coronavirus cases and only one case of the flu.
