Now in the nume realm, particularly the history human, the art, objects, and documents on display have the power to stand in for a larger historical narrative, conveying so much more than what is structurally defining of that object itself. But what about our book, civil war in 50 objects . How did this come about, and how effective is it at conveying the narrative sweep of the civil war in 50 objects . Well, its kind of a tactile history that brings you closer to the lived experience of the civil war. Thats because i was thats what made it so exciting for me. And if youre asking how it happened, it happened because of louise mayer. Louise asked me if i would be doing in this kind of a chronicle for publication, and she said, why dont you come in . I think you were there that first day of review. Why dont you come in, and ill put some of the objects i have in mind on a few tables in the Administrative Offices of the historical society. How effective do you think it is at conveying the narrative sweep of the civil war in only 50 objects . Well, it came about, as i confessed last week, because louise asked me to undertake the project for the Historical Society. It was a lucky day for me. And youll remember that we got to see, i dont know, three times 50 objects, arrayed before us on some conference tables in the Historical Society. So, it was a matter of picking representative objects, exciting objects, which, as you say, stand in the for the big history of the civil war. Item by item, personal story by personal story. And it was remarkable at the end that we constructed the history of the war from the Abolitionist Movement to the 13th amendment, which abolished slavery. Great. And it was great fun to work with you on that project too. I feel the same. Yeah. So, our topic this evening is fighting slavery
Was in print. We always kind of gravitated toward each other. I was such a huge fan of her reporting and she was such a respected journalist. But johanna, youve gone on to even greater things. She went on to earn her ph. D. , as you just heard. She is a scholar in residence. Shes done extraordinary historical work and this latest book is just a treat for all of you who havent had a chance to read it yet or peek at it, you are truly in for a treat. How did you find your way from doing that to being interested in history . Johanna well, actually, i was very happy as a journalist. I loved what i was doing. Can you all hear me . In the history museum, does a lot of heavy lifting and stands in for historical narratives, beyond the characteristics that define the object itself. So, lets just talk for a moment about the civil war and 50 objects, which is why this program. Harold, tell us about it and how the objects can help tell the complex story of the civil war. It is extraordinary, really, because when we undertook this project, eight years ago, it was difficult to find just 50 objects, although we think they tell the story of the war. It is a story of art, as you mentioned, artifacts, art, and objects standing in for the larger story. The story about race, the story about militarization, the story about descent, soldier live, civilian life. But it is also a story about collecting and about the New York Historical society as the trove of this citys lore from the revolutionary periods to today. So i think it is
