Former school librarian who ordered graphic novels depicting nudity and sex acts reprimanded

VANCOUVER A former school librarian on Vancouver Island who was fired in 2019 after purchasing books depicting nudity, sex acts and drug use for the school library s collection has been reprimanded by B.C. s Commissioner for Teacher Regulation. Matthew Norman Lettington was a teacher-librarian at a secondary school in the Nanaimo School District from September 2015 to December 2019, according to a consent resolution agreement posted on the regulator s website on April 20. The agreement stems from the incidents that led to Lettington s dismissal, which involved two books he purchased for the school s collection. The first was a graphic novel called My New York Diary, which Lettington ordered for the school in September 2016, according to the agreement. In January 2018, a parent contacted the school to complain about the book, which contains images of nudity, sexual acts, drug use and mature language.

As a teacher-librarian, Lettington was responsible for selecting and purchasing books for the school library. In September 2016, he ordered a graphic novel called My New York Diary, which includes nudity, sexual acts, drug use and mature language, the agreement says. In January 2018, a parent complained to the school after their child checked the book out of the secondary school library. After a meeting with the principal, Lettington agreed the book may not have been suitable for the library and it was removed from the collection. Lettington had also purchased a second graphic novel depicting nudity, sexual acts and drug use, called La Lesbienne Invisible, in November 2017, but when it arrived, he set it aside in a pile of books to review at a later time.

Commissioner for Teacher Regulation for bringing inappropriate books into a school library. Matthew Norman Lettington was working as a teacher-librarian in the Nanaimo Ladysmith School District in Dec. 20, 2019 when the district made its final complaint to the commissioner about him, according to a Consent Resolution Agreement. As part of his duties in the library, the commissioner explained in a decision published online April 20, he was expected to select and purchase books for the school’s library.
