Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan has an ambitious goal: to get 70% of the cityâs population fully vaccinated by the end of May. Now only if the demand was there. As of Thursday afternoon, at its four city-run vaccination sites, there were more than 14,000 appointment slots available despite the city receiving its largest seven-day federal vaccine allocation to date, allowing it to administer more than 52,000 doses. Is vaccine hesitancy to blame for the unfilled appointments or could it be more due to shortcomings in planning and access, especially for BIPOC communities?

Are festivals going to happen this summer?
Late this week Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that he hoped the state would be fully-reopened before July 1, after New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio said that would be the date his city sought to reach.
That said, local organizers are searching for answers as it relates to holding festivals and small carnivals.
Fire companies are often those putting on festivals throughout the summer in small communities. In the Finger Lakes there are plenty of others. That said, a lack of clear guidance from the state- as well as existing guidance that’s too strenuous for local organizers to deal with- has put many events on ice.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo Thursday said he is hopeful New York City could open before July 1 but called it “irresponsible” to make projections.
Cuomo made the comments during his COVID-19 briefing in Buffalo, when asked about New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio announcing earlier in the day the city would reopen July 1.
In a televised interview, DeBlasio cited the fact 6.3 million people have been vaccinated and other COVID-19 progress in the city as factors in his announcement. But the mayor also admitted the decision was ultimately up to the state.
Cuomo agreed, noting the pandemic in New York is managed by a statewide system, using science and data to determine when a city would open. The governor said he is reluctant to make projections “because I think they are irresponsible.” He questioned setting a July 1 reopening without knowing what is going to happen in May or June.
