But over the last decade, the professor of creative writing at UC Riverside has embarked on a series of collaborations that have allowed audiences a unique way to experience her work through music.  The first, with composer David Serkin Ludwig in 2011, came about after a mutual friend suggested Ludwig set text from Ford’s poetry to one of his compositions. A new experience for Ford at the time, the two would go on to collaborate on three projects involving Ford’s poetry and Ludwig’s music over the next several years. The action moves back in time to an American mother writing letters to her absent Chinese betrothed, looking forward to when they can be together again. Ultimately, when they marry, the mother loses her citizenship due to the Expatriation Act of 1907. Their child, still an American citizen, is taken away by the state. “Pandemic” uses music to signal to listeners what the time period is when the action takes place. A sound montage of news announcements juxtaposes the racist abuses endured by Chinese Americans in the 1930s with those of the present day. Lu wrote “Pandemic” while enrolled in Philadelphia Young Playwrights residency program for young writers. Because it was selected by PYP for a full production, they provided Lu with a professional director, actors, and a design crew.

Radio Hamlet among Old Globe s plans for racially inclusive 2021 season

Print The Old Globe unveiled its 2021 theatrical season Jan. 19 with a lineup of online and onstage offerings that include a radio adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” a new musical, an outdoor production of “Hair” and numerous plays by artists of color. Because of the uncertainties of the pandemic, the new season has few dates attached to the planned shows. If public health orders permit, Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein said he hopes to begin offering outdoor performances on the Lowell Davies Festival stage by late summer or early fall, followed by indoor productions. He’s optimistic that audiences will be eager to return.
