UK ministers have repeatedly defended the decision to move Portugal from green to amber on its travel list by saying the threat of the new Nepal COVID variant is behind their reasoning.

UK Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, has today announced the launch of the Genome UK 2021-2022 implementation plan.
Following the Genome UK policy paper published in September 2020, the plan outlines 27 priority actions for the next year that will help the UK to advance its ambition to become “the world’s most advanced genomic healthcare ecosystem”.
WHY IT MATTERS
The plan outlines 27 commitments to further genomics in the UK, with 5 key goals:
A partnership between Genomics England and NHS England/Improvement to enable faster and more comprehensive genomic testing of cancer
Whole genome sequencing for patients with rare diseases

In late November last year, epidemiologists began noticing some unusual patterns in the spread of COVID-19 in the South East of England.
A national lockdown had been in place since the start of the month, yet despite initial drop offs, cases in parts of Kent, Essex and London had started to increase again.
The problem was flagged to a small team of PHE scientists and external academics in the specialised field of viral genomics – the study of a virus’s genetic make-up.

The UK will offer its world-leading genomics expertise to help identify new variants of the virus that cause COVID-19 in countries in the Caribbean and around the world.
The announcement comes as part of a speech delivered by UK Health Secretary, Matt Hancock at Chatham House. As part of the UK’s Presidency of the G7 this year, the Health Secretary outlined his vision for a stronger, more collaborative and effective global health system, not just in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, but to ensure the international community is better prepared for future threats.
