Following the Garden Reach unauthorized building collapse, the state urban development and municipal affairs department in West Bengal has issued guidelines to address unauthorized constructions and illegal filling of water bodies. Offenders can face imprisonment of five years and a fine of Rs 50,000. The guidelines also emphasize proper management and disposal of construction and demolition waste.
“We are trying to develop the team to streamline and strengthen the surveillance process. The teams will oversee all kinds of commercial activities in residential areas to check whether any illegal or unauthorised activity is happening,” said an official.
