People should carry mobile phones as well as satellite communication devices to ensure their safety when hiking in the mountains, the National Communications Commission (NCC) said at the weekend.

Three workers were killed and two injured after scaffolding at a construction site collapsed in New Taipei City’s Sansia District (三峽), the New Taipei City Fire Department said yesterday.
The incident occurred at about 1pm, when the three-story-high scaffolding collapsed for an unknown reason, the department said.
The construction is part of an elevated section of the MRT metro rail’s Sanying Line.
One of the workers who died in the collapse was from Thailand, while the other two were Taiwanese, the New Taipei City Labor Affairs Department said.

Rescue efforts continued last night after several people had reportedly fallen into the Beishi River (北勢溪) in New Taipei City’s Hubaotan (虎豹潭) area.
At press time, two adults and four children remained missing, the New Taipei City Fire Department said.
The six were part of a group of naturalists organized by a local community, department officials said.
The group departed from the Hubaotan Old Trail (虎豹潭古道) in the afternoon and was on the way back when a downpour started, officials quoted the group’s leader, a teacher surnamed Su (蘇), as saying.
