Freeze said Pierce also helped him write his dissertation while attending graduate school.
Ouachita Parish School Board member Rev. Harold McCoy regarded Pierce as a mentor after meeting him as a teenager. I started involving myself in community service in the early 70s and Mr. Pierce was one of the individuals who was highly regarded as a mentor, he said. He was more of a hands-on type mentor. He didn t socially distance himself from many of the younger guys who were in the next cadre of leadership.
McCoy praised Pierce for his dedication as a deacon at the New Tabernacle Baptist Church in Monroe.
