T&T appointed PM on scheme to bring Billingsgate, New Spitalfields and Smithfields markets into one location
The City of London Corporation has appointed Turner & Townsend and Gardiner & Theobald to key roles on its scheme to develop a new City markets complex in Essex.
The new site in Dagenham is set to become the future home of Billingsgate, New Spitalfields and Smithfield Markets as part of the City’s market co-location programme - that will free up the current Smithfield Market site for the new Museum of London project.

Practice commissioned to lead work on New Spitalfields and Leyton Mills urban design strategy and development framework
Gort Scott has been commissioned to develop a blueprint for the redevelopment of a 25ha swathe of east London that could host up to 5,700 new homes.
The practice is leading work on the future of the New Spitalfields and Leyton Mills area of the Lea Valley, to the north of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, alongside public-realm specialist We Made That and consultants Hatch, Sweco, Cushman Wakefield and Turley.
New Spitalfields Market is due to relocate to a new base at Barking Reach in 2026, while the framework area’s other key elements are Temple Mills Bus Depot, the Leyton Mills Retail Park and the Eton Manor section of the Olympic Park.

Following its decision in December 2020 to endorse a new Operating Model, the City of London Corporation’s governing Court of Common Council today welcomed the appointment of eight new senior officers and formally confirmed the appointment of the first woman as Chamberlain, the Corporation’s Chief Financial Officer, since the post was created in 1237.
Chair of the Establishment Committee Edward Lord said it delivered an aspiration to select the best candidates for each job and diversify the senior management team as six of nine new senior officers are women and two are people of colour.
