From its cover art through its poetry, tabla beats, down to a final, fading note, Mustafa Rafiq’s new album If I Were a Dance is a mesmerizing, inspiring testament to collaboration.
The uniting thread within the project’s twin hemispheres is Rafiq, 25, who backs a crisp, bare poetry cycle by Dwennimmen with a variety of instruments on the A-side, playing guitar and singing along with Nepali tabla player Bhuyash Neupane live on the B.
