The village’s newest business is Kate’s Candles, which is located at 49 Railroad St. in the former Gift Box location. Kate Burnsworth is the owner.
Although her shop is new, she has been making and selling candles out of her home for about six years. She says because of an accident she could no longer work in her prior career and, “I got bored and decided I needed a hobby.”
Her new shop gives her enough space so she can make the candles there. She uses 100 percent soy wax and makes both scented and unscented candles, “because some people are allergic to scents.”
Community center proposed to New London Council

NEW LONDON Pastor Doug Lang from the New London Alliance Church and church member Matt Pickens presented council Monday with a proposal for a community center.
It would be built on 6.6 acres on three parcels in the middle of town between East Main Street and Park Avenue. The village owns 3.383 of these acres and the other two pieces are owned by the United Methodist Church and the school. The area was the location of the old school, which was demolished around 20 years ago.
The men said this center is only in the planning stage and they are just starting discussions with the land owners to see if the idea is feasible. They originally planned to use 10 acres they own across from the church for a center, but would prefer to have it near downtown where it would be accessible to as many people as possible.
