NEW HANOVER COUNTY – Just hours after Gov. Roy Cooper called on school districts to return to in-person instruction, the New Hanover County Board of Education agreed Tuesday night to revisit the decision to fully reopen elementary schools.
After an hour of comments from the public the majority addressing resuming daily in-person classes the board agreed to take up the issue next week at a special meeting. (As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, the date and time had yet to be announced).
Among the issues that have frequented headlines and been the topic of public conversation and debate in 2020, the sale of New Hanover Regional Medical Center sits high on the list.
When a divided New Hanover County Board of Commissioners voted to pursue the possible sale of the largest employer in the county in September 2019, officials and citizens had questions about what the sale would mean for the future of the hospital and the area.
Since then critics of the sale, like Save Our Hospital Inc., have said the process was rushed, lacked transparency and feared a sale could not only lower the quality of care and increase costs, but put taxpayer money in the hands of groups not from the county.
On Jan. 24, Roland-Grise Middle School band teacher Peter Michael Frank became the third New Hanover County Schools employee to be arrested on charges of sexual misconduct involving a student since 2018.
Frank, 47, has since been charged with nearly 30 felony counts for crimes that allegedly took place between 1999 and 2019.
The search warrant issued three days after Frank’s arrest allowed law enforcement to obtain his personnel file, which revealed he had been repeatedly counseled by New Hanover County Schools for “inappropriate relationships” with students.
It further stated that Frank allegedly told law enforcement he was attracted to middle-school-aged girls. Searches of his phone and computers allegedly turned up photos of the “clothed-backsides of female students.”
