Proposed set-up for Conference on the Future of Europe under fire
The Conference, a project that aims to reform the EU and bring it “closer” to its citizens, has been beset by misfortune since it was first mooted by the French two years ago.

Member states had hoped a year-long dispute over the Conference’s mandate and leadership roles had been broken when, last week, they tabled a document outlining the “ground rules” for the conference.
But the draft presented by ambassadors from the EU27 appears merely to have thrown the whole exercise into further confusion.
One respected former MEP even branded the Council policy paper as “vacuous gibberish”, while Sandro Gozi, head of the Union of European Federalists (UEF), said Member States “do not understand” the reason for the Conference.
Thousands of EU workers in British care homes risk falling foul of the legal requirement for them to register their status in the UK before a government deadline expires on 30 June, according to a new report published on Monday (25 January).
1 in 3 care workers have not heard of the UK Government’s EU Settled Status Scheme and 1 in 2 do not know about the deadline, according to a survey of over 290 workers in UK care homes.
“We are still in the middle of a pandemic, while the EUSS deadline for EU citizens is less than six months away,” said Caitlin Boswell, author of the report for the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants.

One thing we have come to expect of Russia is the unexpected. No one predicted the gains made by the Russian opposition in regional elections in Eastern Kharabosk last September. Nor that this would lead to a botched assassination attempt on Alexei Navalny.
By returning to Russia after life-saving treatment in Germany, Navalny has deliberately put himself back into the hands of the regime that tried to kill him. Instead of the perpetrators being brought to justice, it is the victim Navalny himself, who now finds himself behind bars.
