Soda-pop? Soft drink? Soda water?Â
My family just says âsoda.â Whatever you call it, the soft drink industry is huge. When did New Braunfelsers first get a taste for the sugary yet satisfying beverage?
As early as 1872, Otto and Theo Simon were bottling ice-cold soda at their home. They bought a new ice machine in 1875 and, with partner L. Paggi, they opened and ran an ice cream/soda water parlor until 1881. Imagine how amazing an ice cold soda was back in the days of no air conditioning and dusty streets.
Others soon jumped into the increasingly popular drink business. Dr. Grube teamed up with Bruno Voelcker to start their own soda water factory in 1881 but it was short-lived.
The spotlights will remain dark at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema location in New Braunfels, as company officials announced Wednesday that the theaterâs temporary closure will now become permanent.
The Austin-based dine-in theater chain made the announcement online Wednesday morning, citing the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
âLast March, we temporarily closed Marketplace along with every other Alamo Drafthouse location,â a post on the theaterâs website said. âNearly a year later, weâre incredibly sad to tell you that because of the ongoing impact of COVID, we will not be reopening Marketplace.â
Alamo Drafthouse closed its doors in March 2020 when many businesses were forced to close due to the pandemic. After Gov. Greg Abbott allowed theaters to reopen under specific guidelines, the New Braunfels location remained closed.
Sunny and warm. It was the kind of weather organizers of New Braunfels’ annual march commemorating the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday would pray for on Monday.
