Seventeen-year-old Nevaeh Martinez was smart, sweet and had a smile that lit up the room, says her cousin, Tysharianna Thomas.
Nevaeh became Topeka s latest homicide victim after being shot late Saturday in central Topeka, police announced Tuesday morning. She died Sunday, Thomas said.
Charges haven t been filed against a 21-year-old Topeka woman arrested Sunday by police investigating the case.
Martinez s mother, Tiana Cannon, said Nevaeh died while making a visit to Topeka, where she used to live, from Lincoln, Neb., where she was living.
Nevaeh s first name is the word heaven spelled backwards, Cannon said.
She described her daughter as being a typical teenager who was attending high school and working part-time in a retirement home in Lincoln.
