For more than two decades, Ford has been walking the halls of the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System as a Red Coat Ambassador. “I probably get on average between 12 to 15,000 steps a day, depending again on how long I volunteer that day,” said Ford. He helps guide veterans around the facility. “Our job is to do whatever we can to make the veteran s experience a little bit more pleasant here,” Ford said. “If they come in and they don t know where they re going, we help them get to wherever their appointment is. If they have a problem, we try to do our best to solve it.”

A spokesman says anyone who served in the military, regardless of age, can get the vaccine, as well as spouses, caregivers and other beneficiaries. The change comes from the SAVE LIVES Act, signed by President Joe Biden in March, which authorizes the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide more vaccines.  Since the start of the pandemic, VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System has been focused on vaccinating as many veterans as possible, and we are excited to multiply our efforts to thanks to the SAVE LIVES Act, VASNHS Director and CEO William Caron said in a press release.

Veterans, caregivers, spouses, and CHAMPVA beneficiaries newly eligible under the law can go online to sign up to receive a vaccine from VA. Registering will also give users regular updates about VA’s vaccine rollout process. After registering through this site, users are also eligible for a walk-in vaccine at the North Las Vegas VA Medical Center.
