People should act with caution after Englandâs Freedom Day to dampen the impact of an inevitable âexit waveâ, the chief medical officer has warned.
Professor Chris Whitty said there was âextremely wide agreementâ among scientists that there will be an exit wave after all legal restrictions are lifted on July 19, a move the Government has now confirmed is going ahead.Â
He told a Downing Street briefing: âThe slower we take it, the fewer people will have Covid, the smaller the peak will be, and the smaller the number of people who go into hospital and die.â
However, he stressed there was âno clear evidence to suggest that a further delay to the end of lockdown restrictions would make a difference.
