Meanwhile, the United States, the department of defense, and the men and women of the finest fighting force the world has ever known will continue, with your support to work in americans interests defend allies, and upholds the president s commitment that iran will not gain a Nuclear Weapon should it walk away from this deal. Mr. Mccain thank you. Mr. Dempsey. Mr. Dempsey i will keep my comments brief. As i have stated previously i was consulted during the course of the negotiations and provided my best military advice. It addresses a critical and the most dangerous point of friction with the iranian regime, but as i have stated repeatedly, there are at least five other areas of concern from weapons trafficking to the use of surrogates and proxies in naval minds and undersea activity, and last but not least, to malicious activity in cyberspace. The negotiated deal does not change the options at our disposal. We will continue to engage our partners in the region to address these areas.
The project and written product. Its my great honor this morning to moderate a discussion here with governor cain and representative hamilton who, of course, served as the chairman and vicechairman of the 9 11 commission. It was a moment of Public Service by them and to this is irregular. And their contribution the continuing to the present day, and here we are. Good morning. Good morning, tom and chris and the others. Im delighted to be with you. Great. Go ahead, tom. Great to have you and i might say those of you who dont know, a very modest man, but chris was number two on the staff to help get the staff together and get that written. More than hes probably ever received or going to receive. Thank you very much. Look, i think that we thought there would still be a terrorist threat. I am delighted to be with you. Go ahead. Great to have you. He is a very modest man. He held the staff together and get back report written. That is more credit than he probably will receive or is going to. I think we thought there would still be terrorist threat. We once try to predict how it happened and to the extentf it i thinwe thought it would. Before i started any program, they took me to the families. 9 11 have enof the most extraordinary. Th have taken the greatest tragedy and turned it in some ways into triumph in progress and work to help other families, other people, every single minute since their own tragedy. The Largest Organization of families last week are still raising funds for children of people in trouble. Say, the report wouldnt have been done without them. The legislation would have been successful without them. The families have helped us in this fight against terrorism. We would like to pay tribute to them. Terrorism has always been there. Welcome you to your first hearing following your bipartisan conservation in the senate. It took us a little bit longer than we had hoped to get you in this role and we are happy to have you at the helm. We look forward to getting you helping you get a full complement of folks at the department as well. The budget request for the department of energy takes a different approach than weve seen. The president has made a concerted effort to increase funding for the nuclear. This is a portion of the department that falls outside of our community here. The administration has requested robust cleaning of Nuclear Waste. To offset those funding increases the proposed deep cuts to research and development for energy and science. It proposes to phase out innovative programs that have had demonstrated success. I understand what drop the proposal, but i am concerned by certain parts of it. The United States is the worlds leader in science and energy. We like it that way, and we want to keep it that
