Dubbed as the Black Samurai, Yasuke was the first African to have served as a retainer for Japanese daimyō Oda Nobunaga in the late 16th century, at a time when Japan was in the middle of the Sengoku Jidai roughly, the Warring States Period or Era. Yasuke arrived in Japan in 1579, working for Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano.
