DeKALB – New conceptual drawings of NIU’s Greek Life Center were shown to the City Council to back a hopeful consideration to purchase the land where the eventual construction of the center will take place. It is a sad reality that people with disabilities are often overlooked, ridiculed, mistreated and underrepresented. These topics were highlighted in a book discussion and reading on Thursday by Melissa Blake, an NIU alum who graduated in 2005. Blake’s book, “Beautiful People: My Thirteen Truths About Disability,” uses her personal experience with disability to inform.
DeKALB – Dance Dimension will be holding its third annual “Tinsel an’ Tutu” event at the start of December. The event is a fundraiser aimed for financially assisting Dimensions Youth Ballet, whose goal is to provide training for dancers striving for a professional career and further performance opportunities in locations in the DeKalb area. DeKALB – The Huskie pack is on the move this week as NIU prepares for its homecoming week of celebration. NIU, student organizations and local DeKalb businesses will host events until Oct. 15 to celebrate NIU’s 116th homecoming. Homecoming week will officially start with Homecoming Kick Off from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday in.
NIU alum Tatianna Salisbury released her debut poetry collection “words my heart needed to hear” in June. The collection features poems and short stories that express the ugly and dark side of the human experience and the cycle of love. Salisbury is making her way to DeKalb and Rockford in early October to promote her.
