The Coastal Road project consists of a tunnel, road, and an interchange. MUMBAI: The BMC’s ‘Mavala’ Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) completed digging 100 meters of the Coastal Road tunnel on Tuesday. According to BMC officials, the TBM digs around 3 meters per day. Mavala is India’s biggest TBM and has been at work 20 metres under the ground since January 11 when it was commissioned by chief minister Uddhav Thackeray. Officials said that the TBM is placed around 20 meters below the ground under Priyadarshini Park at Nepean Sea Road. The tunnel that begins from Priyadarshini Park will pass through Malabar Hill and ends at Choti Chowpatty along Marine Drive.

Work on the 10.58km road from Princess Street flyover at Marine Drive to Bandra-Worli Sea Link is proceeding at a steady pace (file photo) MUMBAI: Municipal commissioner Iqbal Chahal said BMC had completed 17% work on the coastal road during Covid lockdown. The 400-metre long tunnel boring machine (TBM), which is 40 feet wide and the longest to be used in India, is now fully assembled on reclaimed land, and boring will commence from January 7, he said. Work on the 10.58km road from Princess Street flyover at Marine Drive to Bandra-Worli Sea Link is proceeding at a steady pace. Girders are being cast, piling work is under way along the entire length of the road, said a civic official.
