Neighbouring Nepal has reported a staggering 1200 per cent rise in COVID-19 infections since April, reported CNN. Just a month ago daily cases were hovering around 300. The Himalayan republic is now confirming more than 9000 new cases per day; that is far above the previous peak of 6000 daily cases during a second spike in November. There are fears the rate of infection may be outpacing that in India. Last weekend in Nepal, 44 per cent of all tests came back positive.

Impacts of the deadly new surge in COVID-19 cases
across South Asia are unlike anything the region has seen
before, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has
said, warning of a “real possibility” that health
systems there will be strained to a breaking point, leading
to even more loss of life.
In a statement
on Tuesday, George Laryea-Adjei, UNICEF Regional Director
for South Asia, called
for “urgent action and steadfast leadership” to stop the
catastrophe.
“Governments must do everything within
their power to stop the devastation, and partners that are
able to send assistance must do so immediately. The

UNICEF says Covid-19 hitting children hard in South Asia
The UN’s children fund says the first wave of Covid-19 cost the lives of 228,000 children and 11,000 mothers in the region.

The United Nations children’s fund, UNICEF, is calling on South Asian governments to do everything possible to stop the catastrophe of Covid-19 as soon as possible, saying the virus is disproportionately hitting children in greater numbers.
“The deadly new surge in South Asia threatens us all. It has the potential to reverse hard-earned global gains against the pandemic if not halted as soon as possible,” warned George Laryea-Adjei, UNICEF Regional Director for South Asia, in a statement on Tuesday.
