William “Will” Howarth, professor of English, emeritus, and eminent Thoreau scholar and environmental humanist, died of interstitial lung disease at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center on June 6. He was 82.

Although disrupted by the pandemic, the Springfield Municipal Band and its forerunners have been a constant presence in the community for more than a century. It has its origins in the Illinois Watch Factory Band. Workers at that Springfield factory performed at various community functions beginning in 1881. A separate ensemble, the Capital City Band, formed in 1910.
In 1933, both musical groups merged to form the Springfield Municipal Band. It was a true city orchestra… and not just in name. In 1936, city residents approved a referendum imposing a property tax to support the band and ensure its ability to perform at community events.
