Lynchburg-area schools report nine new COVID-19 cases this week

Democrat to challenge independent incumbent for Nelson County North District supervisor seat

Longtime Nelson County Board of Supervisors member Tommy Harvey is seeking another term, running as an independent and hoping to hold onto the North District seat he has held since 1984. He’s being challenged by Afton resident and former Nelson County School Board member Mary Cunningham, who has announced her intention to run for supervisor as a Democrat. In an interview, Harvey said there was “no decision to it,” and he wants to see the North District do well. Harvey, said he and the board routinely have leaned on his past knowledge and experience. “When you look at our board right now, you’ve got two members that have less than two years’ experience. Then you’ve got the other two members who have four years’ experience,” Harvey said.

Lynchburg-area parents show resilience, adaptability through first year of pandemic

As the pandemic stretches into its second year in Virginia, some area parents have had to navigate a new path forward, maneuvering around the numerous and constant challenges that have been put before their families. The COVID-19 pandemic that has so far claimed more than 525,000 lives and, in Virginia, has resulted in more than 590,000 cases and nearly 10,000 fatalities has affected families to varying degrees. It has canceled plans, devoured vacations and family outings, changed the way parents work and taken students out of school. Parents in the Lynchburg-area despite their different situations are finding common lifelines in how they have approached this past year, oftentimes leaning on family or faith or fighting back with resilience.
